The story
What is the story of Nani Bai Ka Mayra?
Bhavya Kavikala Arts stages Nani Bai Ka Mayra as the bhakti tradition's best-loved account of a god who kept a poor man's promise.
Narsi Mehta, the saint-poet of Junagadh, has given away everything except his bhajans when word comes that his daughter Nani Bai's child is to be married. Custom demands the mayra — the bhaat of gifts a mother's family must carry to the wedding — and the in-laws, meaning to shame the penniless bhakta before the whole town, send a list no merchant could fill. Narsi sets out anyway, with a broken cart and a song. Tradition holds that Krishna himself arrived at the wedding as a wealthy seth of Dwarka, claimed Narsi as his own kin, and filled the courtyard with gifts past the last item on the list.
It is a story Rajasthan's katha singers have carried for generations, and the production keeps that musical spine: Kavitaa Singh's live renditions sit at the centre of the evening, with the full live ensemble around her.
60+ artists in 160 hand-stitched costumes stage the wedding courtyard in marigold and Krishna-blue on a 40-foot LED backdrop. Directed by Arpit Sharma, the Hindi production plays for about two and a half hours.
